Wisdom from Time Off?

by Louis on June 2, 2013

Do you expect to gather perspective from time away from your desk? Not an unusual thought. Blogs hovered in my brow a few times on my recent trip but nothing stunning is rushing from my fingers to this keyboard. The trip combined a family event, some business and leisure.

The Event: My daughter, Peri,  graduated from Scripps College in Claremont, California. Proud dad? You KNOW it!

Business: I started in LA having dinner with my good, long term friend, and one of the very original aging in place visionaries and advocates, Jon Pynoos from the University of Southern California Davis School of Gerontology. Spent the day with PK Fields, founder of a soon to be launched boomer caregiver website and her funding/web partners. PK and I took a hike with Marcie Rogo, founder of ConnectAround. Then we three met Dr Marion‘s son Craig Caryl and wife Sandra for a fun and great dinner. The following day I met with Con Howe and a team at CityView, the national real estate development firm started by Henry Cisneros, who is now a leading Aging in Place advocate.

Leisure: A hiking, camping road trip with my son Kyle. We drove from LA to Grand Canyon, Zion, Bruce, Escalante. He dropped me at the airport in Durango, Co. on his way back to Telluride. Great time? UNBelevievable!

Wisdom: There are a lot of us boomers and older out there active as heck! People I would not have picked out for hot, steep hikes and campgrounds are out in large numbers having a really good time. I was particularly impressed by the number of much more than middle aged women traveling together. I can see why the travel industry is strong. I am sure there is a lot to learn from them.

This discussion will continue soon in reviewing a great new book, Marketing to the Ageing Consumer by two wise hands at this business, Dick Stroud and Kim Walker.  dick stroud's book
